What a Healthy Neck X-Ray Looks Like
Hey, everyone, it’s Dr. Leah from Threefold Chiropractic, and today we’re gonna be talking about—surprise—your neck. You know, the part of you that determines whether you wake up feeling like a superhero or like you slept inside of a pretzel.
So let’s start by looking at what a normal, healthy x-ray looks like. To orient you to this film, this person is facing me, right? This is the back of their skull, their jaw, their cervical spine—or their neck—and down here’s a little fuzzy shoulder joint.
Now, when I look at this film, the very first thing that I’m gonna look at is this head position. I wanna see a head that’s rocked nice and back over the spine, jaw level with the horizon. These vertebral bodies should be nice and square, well-aligned, and stacked one on top of the other. And these disc spaces in between, they should be nice and juicy and equal from the front to the back. Okay?
The Cervical Curve: Your Built-In Shock Absorber
This green line right here is representing what we would call a cervical lordosis. A healthy lordosis looks kind of smooth, like a graceful curve, kind of like a banana.
This curve is designed to act like a built-in shock absorber. It distributes weight, protects the disc, keeps pressure off the nerves. You know, the nerves that run pretty much everything in your whole body: your muscles, your digestion, your mood, your sleep, your ability to turn your head from side to side without sounding like a bowl of Rice Krispies.
Tech Neck and Forward Head Position
Now, here’s the kicker. What does the average person’s neck actually look like? There it is: a curve that’s either too flattened, too kinked, or going entirely the different direction, like your neck missed the memo on body physics.
So why is this happening? It’s because we live in the era of tech neck. Phones, laptops, steering wheels, stress, bad pillows, questionable life decisions—all of these things slowly shift your head farther forward than it should be.
Your head weighs 10 to 12 pounds on a normal basis, but even just two inches forward can make it feel like it’s 40 or 50 pounds even. Basically, if your head position was an employee, it would absolutely be fired.
When that curve flattens or reverses, things start to break down. Discs get compressed, joints get irritated, muscles become tight in all the wrong ways, and your nervous system begins to dysfunction.
Now, it’s not overnight, okay? This is years of microstress stacking up in your body.
Your Neck Posture and Your Neurology
Here’s the part that most people don’t realize. Your neck posture isn’t just about comfort; it’s about your neurology.
When the cervical curve is off, it can affect nerve flow to the arms, the shoulders, the thyroid, down into your fingers, even blood flow to the brain. Translation: that weird tingling in your hands, the headaches, the fatigue, the brain fog.
Sometimes it’s not just stress. Sometimes it’s your neck saying, “Hey, remember me? I’m literally holding up your entire existence.”
How Your Neck Curve Affects Your Silhouette
And yes, let’s talk about aesthetics. When your neck curve collapses, your head shifts forward, and your body tries to help by building tension and sometimes even a little hump.
Suddenly your silhouette goes from elegant swan to, “I’ve been staring at my phone since the 2010s.”
Your body deserves better. You deserve better.
Seeing What’s Going On and Taking Steps to Correct It
So here’s the deal. You don’t have to guess what your neck is doing. We can literally see it. And when we know what’s going on, we can actually take steps to start correcting it: restoring curve, taking pressure off your nerves, actually helping your body function the way that it was designed to function.
At Threefold Chiropractic, this is what we specialize in: restoring structure, improving function, and getting you back to feeling like your true self, doing the things you wanna do, being the person that you wanna be.
If you’ve never had your spine checked, or it’s been a long time, come see us. We’ll look at the x-rays together. I’ll translate everything into normal human language, and we’ll build a plan that actually helps you to move, feel, and function better.
Your future self and your future selfies will thank you for it.
