Okay, so now that you know what a subluxation looks like, let’s talk about how to correct it and what a lumbar spine adjustment actually looks like.

Correction is all about initiating the healing process—not just for the joint, but for the nerves running from the brain through that region and out to your organ tissues. Taking pressure off the nerve is vital for the body to heal properly.

Evaluation First: X-rays & Customization

To properly correct a lumbar subluxation, we first need to evaluate the spine. That means taking X-rays to see exactly where the subluxation is, how it’s moved, and how long it’s been there. Every spine is different, and subluxations can occur in various ways—or even combinations—so we tailor care based on what we find.

Prepping for a Lumbar Adjustment

Let’s walk through a typical setup for a lumbar adjustment.

Today, I’m going to model an adjustment on Dr. Leah. I won’t actually be adjusting her, but I’ll demonstrate what it looks like.

I’m checking for muscle tension, any pelvic rotation or elevation, and shoulder imbalance. These give us clues, because everything in the spine domino effects.

Right now, I’m focusing on L5. Based on what I’m seeing, I’d have her lay on her left side.

Side Posture Setup

Dr. Leah, go ahead and lie on your left side for me.

In the side posture setup, we keep the bottom leg straight and bend the top leg. We drop the shoulder to help open the pelvis. (Normally I’d use a pillow here—sorry, Dr. Leah!)

I’m targeting L5, right here. I’d ask her to take a deep breath in, and then as she exhales, I’d wait for her to fully relax—and right at that moment, I’d deliver a gentle but specific thrust to correct the subluxation pattern.

After the adjustment, I’d have her lie on her back and I would re-evaluate to make sure her nervous system is happy and balanced.

Every adjustment is based on how your body is presenting that day, and over time, as your spine adapts, the listings (misalignments) may change—which is exactly what we want to see in a corrective care plan.
